ELMWOOD, WI – As has been the custom for the past 31 years, Elmwood High School students with an A- average or above were invited to a banquet held in their honor. This year 60 students received the invitation.

“Every student in grades 9-12 who has an A- average or above receives an invitation to the banquet. Seniors receiving scholarships and all those who are members of the National Honor Society are also included on that list,” said fifth grade teacher, Bev Glaus.

She continued, “Paula Haugle, Elmwood School Counselor, does a wonderful job getting out the scholarship information, and the banquet is supported by local clubs, businesses and individuals many of whom present at the banquet. The banquet is a way for them to be recognized for their generosity and also their contributions to the community.”

All students are called up individually, given a certificate and then congratulated for their good work. Below is the wording on the certificate:

The Thirty-Second Annual Honors Banquet

To recognize, encourage, and promote superior academic achievement.

May 7, 2014

Many teachers not only put in a full day of teaching, but when the final bell rang on May 7, they reported to the gym and set things up for the evening’s banquet. That evening they served the guests. “This year teachers served 192 guests, including families of the students being honored, scholarship presenters and Elmwood School Board members,” said Glaus adding, “A special thank you to the Elmwood School hot lunch staff, Scott Brown, Becky Traun, and Allison Hovind, for preparation of the meal and assistance with the service.”

Glaus speaks for many teachers when she says, “It is a great evening, working with co-workers and meeting families and members of the community. This is one of my favorite evenings of the school year. The work that goes on behind the scenes requires teamwork from the staff.  During the school day it isn’t always easy to spend time with colleagues. The banquet is an opportunity to participate in an event, centered round the students and their accomplishments.”

On Wednesday evening, Paula Haugle welcomed the students, their families and community members to the banquet. This was followed by the Invocation by Heidi Webb. During the meal, Stuart Wallace provided musical selections.

Following the meal, NHS President, Dannelle Martineau introduced the students who would be inducted into the National Honor Society. Haugle then presented the NHS Scholarships and introduced the five students of the Class of 2014; she also served as emcee for the event.

This was followed by the presentation of nearly 40 scholarship/awards. Members of the community as well as faculty and administration presented these awards. Having members of the community present awards is a way to thank these people for their generosity and acknowledge the part they play in funding many of these scholarships.
